Science seems to play an ever increasing role in our society. The products that we buy and produce are becoming more technical and, therefore, jobs are becoming more technical. It is important to develop a good understanding of basic science.
Non-destructive testing allows us to examine structures, materials or components without damaging or destroying the object being tested, and provides a means to ensure product reliability and quality. There are an assortment of NDT techniques used throughout a broad cross-section of industries. The Four most widely used techniques being Radiography, Ultrasonic, Liquid penetrant and Magnetic particle testing.
Non-destructive testing is used for in-service inspection and for condition monitoring of operating plant. It is also used for measurement of components and for the measurement of physical properties such as hardness and internal stress.
Around the world, NDT technicians do thousands of inspections and tests every day to assess new product quality, equipment condition and reliability. By doing so, they help prevent failures in nuclear power, aviation, transportation, oil and gas, petrochemical plants and anywhere else where public safety or the environment could be significantly impacted. All without destroying or disassembling the item that is being inspected.
NDT has become a mandatory tool for inspection of metals for almost all engineering associated plants like Oil & Gas, aerospace, refinery and shipbuilding. A trained and certified NDT person had a wide opportunity in India and abroad. NDT can be learnt by Diploma holders (in electrical, mechanical & electronics), B.E, ITI or even 10th & 12th STD students but the experience requirement can vary for each categories.
The key personnel in the company have considerable numbers of years’ experience in many areas of Inspection which has facilitated the wide range of Inspection activities in India and Abroad such as Welding Inspection, Visual Inspection, Radiographic Testing, Magnetic Particle Testing, Penetrant Testing Ultrasonic Testing and Quality Management.
The need for competent personnel to perform NDT tasks is paramount in all industries. In order to determine competency, systems have been devised to ensure that NDT personnel have the proper training, have passed written and practical examinations, and have enough experience to properly perform NDT tasks using the applicable test method or technique. Personnel that have met all three of these requirements are said to be “qualified,” and once qualified they can be certified, which is defined in several different ways under the various NDT systems.
GINDT certification programs have two levels of NDT qualification: Level I and Level II. Because the requirements for the levels are very similar, the descriptions provided here are from the 2011 edition of the ASNT Recommended Practice No. SNT-TC-1A & ANSI/ASNT CP-189.
Individual should be qualified to properly perform specific calibrations, specific NDT and specific evaluations for acceptance or rejection determinations according to written instructions and to record results. The NDT Level I should receive the necessary instruction and supervision from a certified NDT Level II or III individual.
Individual should be qualified to set up and calibrate equipment and to interpret and evaluate results with respect to applicable codes, standards and specifications. The NDT Level II should be thoroughly familiar with the scope and limitations of the methods for which he is qualified and should exercise assigned responsibility for on-the-job training and guidance of trainees and NDT Level I personnel. The NDT Level II should be able to organize and report the results of NDT tests.
Academic training workshops are for students seeking to complete the practical lab portion of an academic training course, as required by the American Society for Non-Destructive Testing (SNT-TC-1A & ANSI/ASNT CP-189) a NDT Certification Body. The basic theory and application of the respective NDT technique is explained and demonstrated. Students have the opportunity to practice using the appropriate NDT equipment technique.
